Details

Anatu was established in 2002 as a small family winery by enthusiasts André and Freda Hamersma (sister) from Johannesburg and Wickus and Anina Guelpa (sister) from Stellenbosch together with Dries van Zyl (brother). A small quantity of Shiraz was produced then in a confined space in Riebeek Kasteel, largely for the enjoyment of family and friends.

Positive reaction to the wine provided sufficient encouragement to increase volumes and in 2003 production was relocated to space in the modern Stellekaya facility in Stellenbosch, which is still used today.

Anatu’s aim is to hand-craft wines that are both irresistible and full of character and to do it without compromise. When making red wine, grapes are hand-picked in small baskets, transported in cooled trucks and hand-sorted on a sorting table. Barrels are used for fermentation as well as maturation and wines are not filtered or fined. A minimalistic approach is also taken in making white wine and only spectacular grapes are used to ensure the end-product is exceptional.
