About Fairview Cheese
Cheese production at Fairview started in 1980, when Cyril Back purchased a herd of Saanen milking goats and brought them to the farm. At the time, goats milk cheese was an unknown product in South Africa. Cyril employed the assistance of Michele Agostinelli to begin the Fairview Vineyard Cheesery, producing a small range of goats’ milk cheeses for sale from the farm.
In 1992, Louis Lourens was employed as head cheese maker. In 1995, Jersey milk was introduced and subsequently the range of cheeses produced expanded to include cow’s milk cheeses as well as a range of products combining cow and goats’ milk.
Today, the Fairview Cheesery produces a range of over 50 cow’s milk and goat’s milk artisanal cheeses, including white mould, blue mould, feta and cream cheese styles.
To ensure there is something for everyone, we strive to offer a range of both traditional cream cheeses such as Brie and Camembert, while our winning innovations such as our White and Blue Rock cheeses help place us ahead of the herd. All our cheeses are made with non-animal rennet and are certified Halaal and Kosher. All that’s left for you to do it taste and enjoy!
Profile of our Cheesemaker
The Fairview Vineyard Cheesery’s team is led by cheese maker Louis Lourens, who has been with the company since 1990. His extensive experience and insight into the industry is vital in maintaining Fairview’s position as an industry leader and innovator. Lourens is assisted by cheesemaker Bruce Rowbotham, who joined the company in 2005. In addition, Fairview has assembled a team of experienced staff and food technologists who assist in all aspects of new product development and quality control.
