Vineyard

Many connoisseurs believe the Devon Valley to be one of South Africa’s prime areas for the production of excellent red wines. During 2000 and 2001, therefore, the 18 hectares of previously white wine vineyards were replanted with cultivars best suited to the deep, fertile Oakleaf and Tukulu soil in this part of the valley, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot.

The gentle rolling hills and the moderate climate of the valley allows good penetration of the cool, early-morning sunlight that is beneficial to the vineyards. Proximity to the coast ensures a constant breeze, providing the necessary coolness and airflow during the warm summer months. This is important for slow- and even-ripening of the grapes.
Great care is taken in the vineyard to create the most favourable conditions for the production of first class red grapes. Our viticulturist, Frans Snyman, prides himself in the diligent cultivation and management of the Kyburg vineyards, with each activity painstakingly monitored throughout the year, to ensure only the finest harvest.
