Minerals In Water

There is a lot of confusion about what water does, and what it doesn’t. While water is an amazing element and we at RO3 Oasis water have sung its praises many times, it is not divine in its ability to do everything in the body. So let’s separate the wheat from the chaff. Here are some things water can do:

Some benefits of drinking water

  • Water makes it easier to pump blood through your body to get oxygen-rich blood cells to your muscles, enabling you to exercise harder for longer
  • Flushes out toxins and clears the skin
  • Prevents and improves digestive problems and constipation
  • Adequate hydration helps control appetite
  • Improves state of mind as even mild dehydration negatively impacts mood
  • Protects joints and cartilage and thus prevents injuries
  • Helps to fight inflammation and infection
  • It helps us to think more clearly as dehydration causes shrinkage of brain tissue!

Water is a hydrant, not a nutrient

Pretty amazing right? But what it does not do is feed your body. Water is a hydrant, not a nutrient. There are those that insist that drinking mineral-rich water is good for your health. Looking at what minerals are and how they are used in the body will help us in analysing this misconception.

Some minerals are toxic

Firstly, not all minerals are good for you. According to the WHO, only calcium and magnesium in water are beneficial to the body. The other minerals are either not absorbed from water, or are trace minerals like arsenic, lead and aluminium of which the body needs very little (less than 100mg/day). In excess, these lead to toxic episodes, heavy metal poisoning and other serious complications.

Inorganic minerals are not readily absorbed

Secondly, minerals in water are inorganic (like rocks) and not organic (like spinach). You can get your calcium from rocks, or you can get it from dairy, fruit, and vegetables, where the plant or animal has done some of the processing for you. There is considerable debate in the scientific community about the usefulness of inorganic minerals in the human diet. The body can absorb minerals from inorganic sources, but much less efficiently than from organic sources.

Water doesn’t contain sufficient amounts of beneficial minerals

Even if the water contains calcium and magnesium, it is not enough to supply in the body’s needs. You would have to drink more than 30 litres of water a day to get the recommended daily amount of 1000mg of calcium. And that is provided your body absorbs 100% of the available calcium, which it cannot.

It is impossible to filter out toxic minerals and keep the good ones

As explained above, only minute amounts of calcium and magnesium are absorbed from the water. Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose: if you leave the beneficial minerals, the harmful ones stay too. It’s all or nothing.

While there might be negligible benefits to having Magnesium and Calcium in water, living in a world where contaminated water is the number one cause of death should place the importance of water purity above its mineral content.

Water Choices

Here’s another modern dilemma people did not have to worry about 100 years ago: which water to buy. Today’s array of water choices can be more bewildering than going curtain shopping with your wife: “Off-white, ivory, cream, bone, vanilla, old lace or antique white sir?”  Today we are giving you a condensed, quick reference guide.

South African law recognises three categories of water: Water defined by origin, Natural water and Prepared water.

Mineral Water and Spring Water

These can fall in the “water defined by origin” category if antimicrobial treatment is required for sterilization, or “Natural Water” category if the water is not altered in any way. Mineral water occurs in nature with dissolved salts present, and may be naturally carbonated. Spring water comes from an underground source without enough salts to be classified as mineral.

Spring and mineral water conjure up pictures of pristine mountains pool (largely due to clever marketing). In reality, all the term really means is that it came from an underground source, same as a drilled well or borehole.

Prepared Water

This category includes municipal, surface or underground water that has been purified by treatments that change the chemical composition of the water. The source of the water is really irrelevant as impurities are removed. The processes used to purify the water can differ widely, so make sure you know whether things like hormones and heavy metals are removed. The TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) count is a good indicator of purity. A lower TDS means cleaner water, so aim for no more than 100, preferably less.

Sparkling Water

Any of the three types of water can have CO2 added to it, or it may be from a naturally carbonated spring.

Flavoured Water

When light flavouring (usually fruit flavours) with minimal sugar is added to any category of water, it is called flavoured water. Be sure to check the sugar content though, as not all flavoured water brands are created equal and some might have as much sugar as regular soda. Flavoured water can be still or sparkling.

Vitamin/ Enriched Water

Despite the healthy-sounding name, this category of “water” contains 6 teaspoons and more of sugar per bottle with some healthy-sounding additives. It is really soda minus the bubbles.

Mineral Enriched Water

This can be either water defined by origin or prepared water to which minerals are added.

Oasis Purification Process

From dubious to divine: The RO3 Oasis purification process

Offers of clean water are a dime a dozen these days. So let’s take a look at why Oasis’ method delivers the purest water. It is no secret that we think our water is the bee’s knees, so allow us to share with you why Oasis is the purest water out there:

It is true, we start with plain old raw water, just like a diamond starts with common coal. The secret with our water, and diamonds, is the process the commonplace raw material goes through to become exceptional. We employ a six-step filtration system to take our water from common, to sublime.

Instead of just using a single-stage treatment process and calling it clean, our water has to undergo SIX treatment stages before receiving the honour of being called Oasis water.

Step 1: Rapid Sand Filtration

The first step consists of layers of sand and gravel, arranged according to density and sand particle size, which trap and strain particles in the water. The particles removed in this step are rather large and include items like bugs and organisms, algae, and other suspended dirt in the water. After this step the water looks a lot cleaner to the naked eye, but is not yet safe to drink.

Step 2: Carbon Filtration

Carbon has a very large surface area, allowing it to absorb a large amount of chemicals and harmful substances like chlorine, benzene, pesticides, herbicides and a host of other deleterious man-made chemicals that find their way into our water. It also removes larger dangerous microorganisms such as giardia, but generally viruses are too small and will move through a carbon filter. Carbon filtration also removes odours and bad tastes from the water. Oasis water passes through two carbon filters to ensure superior quality.

Step 3: Element Filtration

This step is a pre-filtration for the Reverse Osmosis system and removes undissolved solids as small as 1 micron, colloids and larger colour causing organics (NOM) from the feed stream.

Step 4: Reverse Osmosis

In this step dissolved inorganic solids (like salts) are removed by pushing the water through a semipermeable membrane. This effectively removes nitrates, heavy metals like mercury, lead and arsenic, sodium as well as bacteria.

Step 5: Ultra Violet Treatment

This taste, odour and chemical-free treatment is extremely effective in killing disease-causing microbes like E. coli, bacteria and viruses and destroying hormones.

Step 6: Ozonation

Ozone is an excellent disinfectant with the superior ability to kill viruses, bacteria and biological contaminants found in water. Oxidization by ozone in water purification also aids in removing taste and odour problems from water much more efficiently than chlorine, and ozone itself doesn’t produce any odour or taste. Due to the fact that ozone consists of oxygen, it reverts back to pure oxygen and increases oxygen levels. Furthermore, the ozone sterilizes the containers during the bottling and refill process.
